3RD Rock Grid, LLC (“we”, “us”) operates the virtual world at 3rdrockgrid.com and its associated grid services. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the commitments we make to you about protecting it.
Our Core Commitment
We will never sell your personal data. We will never disclose your personal data to any third party except in the limited circumstances described in this policy under “When We Share Information” — chiefly, when we are required to do so by law. In the limited cases where a third-party contractor needs access to systems containing personal data — for example, for server maintenance — that contractor is required to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before any access is granted.
Information We Collect
- Account information — when you register, we collect your avatar name, email address, and a securely hashed password. You may optionally provide additional profile details.
- Technical information — IP addresses, viewer (client) version, and connection logs, collected automatically when you connect to the grid or visit this website.
- In-world data — content you create or upload (objects, textures, scripts), your inventory, region and parcel data, and standard service logs of grid activity needed to operate the world, including chat, instant-message, and transaction logs. Staff access to these logs is limited to investigating abuse reports, technical problems, and terms-of-service violations.
- Website data — standard web server logs, and any information you submit through forms on this site (such as support requests or DMCA notices).
- Payment information — if you purchase services from us, payments are processed by our payment provider; we do not store your full card details on our servers.
How We Use Your Information
- To create and operate your account and provide grid services;
- To respond to support requests and communicate service matters with you;
- To keep the grid safe — including preventing fraud, abuse, and violations of our terms of service;
- To maintain and improve our services, using aggregate, non-identifying statistics wherever possible.
We do not use your personal data for third-party advertising, and we do not build or share marketing profiles of our users.
When We Share Information
We disclose personal data only in these circumstances:
- When required by law — in response to a valid subpoena, court order, or other lawful demand by a competent authority;
- With contractors under NDA — where a contractor performing work for us (such as hosting or server maintenance) requires access to systems containing personal data, and only after they have signed a non-disclosure agreement;
- Currency and payment providers — when you transact in in-world currency, the applicable provider (PODEX or Gloebit) receives the account and transaction information needed to operate the currency system, and our payment processor receives what it needs to process purchases you make from us. These providers operate under their own privacy policies;
- Hypergrid travel — if you teleport to another grid via the Hypergrid, that destination grid necessarily receives your avatar identity in order to complete the connection. Other grids operate under their own privacy policies, which we do not control;
- Business transfers — if 3RD Rock Grid is sold, merged, or reorganized, your account data may be transferred to the successor operator, which will remain bound by the commitments in this policy.
Data Retention
We retain account data for as long as your account is active. Server and connection logs are retained only as long as needed for security and troubleshooting. If you close your account, you may request deletion of your personal data by contacting us; we will honor such requests except where the law requires us to retain certain records.
Your Rights
You may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct inaccurate data, or request deletion of your data, by contacting us at the address below. We will respond to all legitimate requests within a reasonable timeframe.
Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections, hashed password storage, and restricted administrative access. No online service can guarantee absolute security, but we treat the protection of your data as a core obligation.
Cookies
This website uses only functional cookies — for example, to keep you logged in or remember your display preferences (such as dark mode). We do not use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.
Children
3RD Rock Grid is intended for users aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will post the updated version on this page with a new effective date and announce the change on the grid.
