Download and Setup a Viewer

To enter our virtual world, you need to download and install a viewer that connects you to 3RG (in case you don't have one installed already). Think of this viewer as an internet browser, but then for virtual worlds. And where you have a choice of internet browsers for browsing websites (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, ...), there are various viewers available for getting into virtual worlds.

Note that we are not affiliated with any of the viewers we name and/or recommend. The list below is purely based on what we and the citizens of 3RG know to work and like best. Any viewer that supports the OpenSimulator (OS) protocols, can be used. On the Wiki of OpenSimulator.org, a page is dedicated to compatible viewers (check it out).

 3RG does not provide support for any of the viewers.

Currently we recommend to use the SceneGate viewer, again purely based on what our 3RG citizens tell us. Feel free to try any of the other viewers too, they are all gratis, and installing them is typically very easy. Click on a link in the table below to go to the website of the viewer of your choice. Select and install a version for your computer.

Setup the viewer


Next is to setup your viewer for 3RD Rock Grid. The viewer you have downloaded can give access to many virtual worlds. These virtual worlds are listed in the viewer's grid list. If 3RG is already listed, just set it to 'default' and proceed to the page: 'Logon to 3RD rock Grid'.


If 3RD Rock Grid is not listed in the viewer's grid list, you have to add it. Here is how to do that:

To add 3rd Rock Grid to the viewer list,


  1. Find the grid manager. Typically it is on the Preferences menu, on the tab Grids (Alchemy), or on the tab Opensim (Firestorm), but you may have to search for it.
  2. Add the address http://grid.3rdrockgrid.com:8002 (just copy/paste) ...
  3. ... and click Add (or Apply).
  4. Click OK to close the Grid Manager


Now you can proceed to logon.

Start your viewer


In SceneGate, make sure 3RD Rock Grid is either your default grid (Preferences ...) or selected in the grid list below. Provide your Username (not mine), your Password, and click Log In.



In Alchemy, make sure 3RD Rock Grid is either your default grid (Preferences ...) or selected in the grid list below. Provide your Username (not mine), your Password, and click Log In. That is all.


In Firestorm, make sure 3RD Rock Grid is either your default grid (Preferences ...) or selected in the grid list below. Provide your Username (not mine), your Password, and click Log In. That is all.


If you are using a different viewer, the process will be very similar.
