About the Stichting Cultural Harbour

3RD Rock Grid (3RG) has been around for a quite a while now. In fact it is one of the oldest grids using the OpenSimulator software. 3RG has been around for so long, changing hands a couple of times, that nowbody knows any longer when it started exactly, but it must have been somewhere in 2007.

To safeguard this legacy, and ensure a bright future for 3RG, a group of friends from 3RG was asked to take the reins, and so ...

On December-10-2021, the Stichting Cultural Harbour was created to put a solid foundation under the efforts to bring you 3RD Rock Grid. What does that mean? And what exactly is a Stichting?

  • A Stichting (foundation) is a type of company in the Netherlands. The Stichting Cultural Harbour is officially registered with the Chamber of Commerce with registration number 84746637 (https://www.kvk.nl/).
  • A Stichting is run by a number of directors, between 3 and 6 in our case.
  • These directors are not paid for their services to the Stichting, a requirement for this company type.
  • A Stichting is also a not-for-profit type company. This does not mean that we can't make a profit, but means that this profit has to stay inside the Stichting. In other words: there are no pay-outs to shareholders or other stakeholders; all money that comes in is used to realise the goals of the Stichting.
  • The tax authorities know about us, but because of our goals and setup we do not have to pay tax. Again meaning that all money that comes in, is used to keep us afloat.
  • Note that the word Stichting has to be part of the official name of what we informally call the Cultural Harbour Foundation, or just Cultural Harbour.

The way the Stichting Cultural Harbour conducts its business is governed by a set of Statutes. Most of this is pretty standard and boring. If you want to know all the legal details, just give us a shout; we will send you a copy of the Statutes which will put you right to sleep before you even reach page 2. One part of these Statutes we like to highlight here are the goals of the Stichting Cultural Harbour. In one sentence:

Through 3RD Rock Grid, the Cultural Harbour Foundation aims to offer a safe environment where people can grow (emotionally, socially, skills, knowledge, ...).

In the Statutes this is formulated as follows.

The goals of the foundation are:

  • To enhance human dignity in an international cultural, educational, and social exchange. An exchange based on equality, empathy, respect, and compassion, and through a process of sharing, participation, and cooperation.
  • Any other actions, related to the above in the broadest sense, or contributing to it.

The foundation attempts to achieve its goals, including by:

  • Offering a virtual world for cultural, educational, and social activities
  • Stimulating and facilitating educational programs
  • Exhibiting art and other creative or cultural works
  • Exhibiting virtual replica's of our cultural heritage
  • Organising musical and other cultural events in the virtual environment
  • Other programs/projects that help, directly or indirectly, create a better world.

We are convinced that by embedding 3RG in this Stichting (foundation), we can offer the best continuity and quality for 3RG that is possible, and make the world a little better.

BTW, because we are such an international group, spending all our time in front of computers, we don't have any fancy offices in the real world to visit, just a postal address.
